Ossimba Beach Lodge
Ossimba Beach Lodge
Ecolodge on Nacala Bay, northern Mozambique: 50 hectares, 1.5 km private beach, coral reef and PADI dive centre on-site.
Ossimba Beach Lodge occupies a 50-hectare estate at the entrance to Nacala Bay, in Nampula Province, northern Mozambique. Some 30 kilometres east of the town of Nacala, the property overlooks a 1.5 km beach protected by a coral reef designated as a marine reserve. The address appeals to travellers drawn by diving, humpback whale watching, and the tranquillity of a still-quiet coastline.
Why choose Ossimba Beach Lodge
- A private 1.5 km beach facing a coral reef classified as a marine reserve.
- A PADI-certified dive centre, Aqualung-labelled and DAN Industry partner, on-site.
- Humpback whale season from July to September, observable from the bay.
- Three villa categories, including stilt villas with private natural pool at low tide.
- A 50-hectare forest estate ideal for walks and birdwatching.
Atmosphere
The spirit of the place stems from its seclusion: no development nearby, a preserved coastal forest, and a beach shared only with other residents. Villas are scattered through the vegetation, with thatched roofs, no flashy air-conditioning or superficial décor. Days unfold with the rhythm of the tides — diving outings in the morning, kayaking or paddleboarding in the afternoon, sundowners at the Sunset Bar perched above the water, with views of Nacala's granite mountains. At high tide, you can observe from the bar the schools of fish and their predators in action.

Dining and activities
The lodge's cuisine blends local produce—seafood, fish, seasonal vegetables—with international dishes. Meals are served in an open dining room, lounge, or on the terrace above the water. The Sunset Bar offers craft beers, a curated wine selection, spirits, and house cocktails.
As for activities, the offshore reef is the main focal point: scuba diving (day and night), snorkelling, paddle and kayak outings through neighbouring mangroves. From July to September, humpback whales pass offshore during migration. On land, the 50 hectares of forest are perfect for walks and birdwatching.
The PADI dive centre, Aqualung-labelled and DAN Industry partner, runs several courses: Discover Scuba Diver, Open Water Diver, Advanced Open Water, and personalised PADI training.
Location and access
The lodge is located roughly 30 km east of Nacala, in a pristine area between forest and ocean.
GPS coordinates: S 14°25'9.26 / E 40°47'6.60.
Access is by air, followed by a transfer organised by the lodge:
- From Johannesburg: direct Airlink flights to Nampula (Tuesday and Thursday, frequencies to confirm), then approximately 3 hours' drive to the lodge (paid transfer, up to 4 people).
- From Maputo or other Mozambique cities: LAM connections to Nacala, then a 35-minute transfer offered by the lodge.
Depending on your itinerary, allow a comfortable margin for connections, particularly via Maputo.
When to visit
The dry season, April to November, offers the best diving conditions and underwater visibility. The July to September window is the only time to see humpback whales during migration. The rainy season, December to March, remains warm but brings stormy episodes and more variable underwater visibility.
