Ponta Membene
Ponta Membene
Secluded lodge in Maputo National Park, accessible by 4x4, between dunes, coastal forest and Indian Ocean: safaris, marine outings and deserted beaches.
Ponta Membene is a lodge located in Maputo National Park, at Ponta Milibangalala, on the southern coast of Mozambique. The site, once a difficult-to-reach elephant reserve, is now a protected area where savannas, lakes, coastal forests and beaches coexist. Access is exclusively by 4x4, which limits visitor numbers and preserves the isolation of the location.
Why stay at Ponta Membene
The lodge combines three experiences on a single site: land safaris in the park, marine outings along the Indian coastline and relaxation facing the ocean. This versatility makes it a relevant stop for those wishing to combine wildlife and beach without changing accommodation. The atmosphere remains that of a coastal bush lodge, with few surrounding infrastructures and nature as the dominant feature.
- Located in a protected area still rarely visited by international tourism.
- Dual habitat, both terrestrial and marine, accessible from the same base.
- Accommodations spread between dunes and canopy, integrated into the landscape.
Atmosphere of the place
The lodge follows the rhythm of nature: sandy tracks, bird calls, open skies over the Indian Ocean. The restaurant opening onto the forest and the lapa serve as gathering points at day's end. The infinity pool facing the ocean offers an unobstructed view of the coastline, with no visible construction nearby. Limited lighting after dark encourages stargazing.
Accommodations
Several lodging types coexist, all integrated into the environment:
- Chalets with catering service: 8 units with double beds, meals provided on-site.
- Dune chalets: 4 two-bedroom chalets and 4 four-bed chalets, suitable for families or small groups.
- Forest chalets: beneath the canopy, in 2 or 4-bed versions.
- Equipped camping: pitches with sanitary facilities and common spaces.
Dining and services
- Main restaurant: Mozambican cuisine and international options, dining room opening onto the forest.
- Meals: continental or full English breakfast, lunch and dinner.
- Kitchen and braai: some accommodations feature a kitchen area or barbecue for self-catering.
- Bar and lounge for evening relaxation.
- Wi-Fi in common areas (reception, restaurant, lapa).

Location and access
The lodge is situated at Ponta Milibangalala, within Maputo National Park. Access is restricted to 4x4 vehicles.
- From Johannesburg: approximately 660 km via Komatipoort and Bela Vista, Futi entrance.
- From Durban: approximately 514 km via Kosi Bay and Ponta do Ouro.
Without a personal 4x4, arrange a rental or transfer from the border. On sandy tracks, adjust tire pressure to a maximum of 180 kPa for safe driving.
When to visit
The dry season, from May to October, offers the most stable conditions for land safaris and tracks. For marine outings, sea turtle nesting is observed from October to February, a period coinciding with warmer water and better underwater visibility. Whale sharks are reported seasonally; confirm with the lodge before booking.
