Montebelo Gorongosa Lodge & Safari
Montebelo Gorongosa Lodge & Safari
Safari lodge in the heart of Gorongosa National Park (4,000 km²): villas, bungalows, Chikalango restaurant and 4x4, boat and walking safaris.
Montebelo Gorongosa Lodge & Safari is located within Gorongosa National Park, a protected area spanning more than 4,000 km² in central Mozambique. Part of the Montebelo Hotels & Resorts group, the establishment combines villas, bungalows and garden rooms with a programme of activities centered on wildlife and local communities.
Why stay here
Gorongosa is home to one of southern Africa's most closely monitored ecological restoration programmes: wildlife has been gradually rebuilt after the civil war, with the lodge serving as its primary hospitality base. You stay within the park itself, which reduces travel time to safari zones and allows for early departures, when wildlife is most active.
The lodge works closely with surrounding villages: the majority of restaurant ingredients come from community organic farms, and several excursions (cycling, Mount Gorongosa) pass through neighbouring hamlets. For comparisons with other lodges in the region, also see Hlane Royal National Park Ndlovu Camp or Nambu Camp.
Atmosphere
The lodge is organized around two outdoor pools and a landscaped core planted with mature trees that attract birds and small mammals. The architecture blends solid structures with thatched roofing, in a sober rather than luxurious safari style. Chikalango restaurant opens onto the vegetation, and the bar terrace extends the evening after outings. Signage remains discreet: you move about on foot under staff escort when the wildlife context requires it.
Accommodation
Five categories cater to different traveller profiles:
- Premium Villa: two bedrooms, lounge, dining room and private patio, for families or small groups.
- Standard Villa: two bedrooms with equipped kitchen, dining area and lounge, self-contained format.
- Premium Bungalow: located near the pool, at the lodge's heart, suitable for couples and families alike.
- Standard Bungalow: set in a quieter area, some units with interconnecting bedrooms.
- Garden Room: close to communal spaces, with units adapted for guests with reduced mobility.
Each unit features mosquito nets, private bathroom, air conditioning or fan, safe, kettle and veranda or outdoor lounge. Breakfast is included and served at Chikalango.
Services and dining
Chikalango restaurant offers African, Mediterranean and Portuguese cuisine, with vegetarian, vegan, halal and gluten-free options. Ingredients are largely sourced from community organic farms.
Meal times
- Breakfast: 6am – 10am
- Lunch: 12pm – 3pm
- Dinner: 7pm – 9:30pm
Two experiences stand apart from the main restaurant: the Bush Dinner, a meal around a campfire with traditional music (minimum 15 people, by reservation), and breakfast or dinner served in the wilderness subject to availability and weather.
Facilities include: two outdoor pools, spa with massages and treatments, souvenir shop, meeting room for up to 80 people, gardens, secure private parking, bar and outdoor terrace. Wi-Fi is available in communal areas, card payments (Visa, Mastercard) accepted, and the reception is open from 6am to 10pm.
Activities and safaris
- 4x4 safari lasting 3 hours covering over 150 km of tracks (elephants, lions, hippopotamuses, zebras, antelopes).
- Boat or canoe safari, depending on water levels, to approach hippopotamuses and crocodiles.
- Walking safari with a guide.
- Birdwatching safari: the park is home to over 500 recorded bird species.
- Guided cycling excursion lasting 2.5 hours through surrounding villages.
- Mount Gorongosa excursion (7-hour trek): coffee plantations, local beehives, Morumbodzi waterfalls, swimming and picnic.
- Overnight at Wild Camp in the savanna.
Access and location
- From Beira: 200 km, approximately 3.5 hours via the EN1 national road to Inchope, then heading east to the park.
- From Chimoio: 130 km, approximately 2.5 hours via EN6 to Inchope, then a well-maintained secondary road to the lodge.
- From Quelimane or Tete: longer journeys but achievable in one day via the main roads through the country's centre.
A private transfer service is available on request from Beira, Chimoio or other entry points.
When to visit
The dry season, from May to October, is the most favourable for safari: vegetation clears, animals concentrate around watering holes and tracks remain passable. June to August offers cooler temperatures in the morning. The rainy season (November to March) transforms the landscape: the savanna turns green again, birdwatching reaches its peak with the arrival of migratory species, but some tracks may be closed and boat safaris depend on water levels. For activities combining a stay with the coast, the transition months (April-May and September-October) are most versatile.
Combine with
The lodge lends itself well to an itinerary combining inland and coastal Mozambique. To extend to the beach and diving, see Nuarro Lodge or Ossimba Beach Lodge on the northern coast. To build a complete stay, consult our trips to Mozambique.
