Nambu Camp
Nambu Camp
Intimate camp of six suites run by the Drinkwater family, within Olifants West reserve (Greater Kruger). Safaris, local cuisine and views over the savanna.
Perched on the heights of a former termite mound, within the Olifants West reserve in the Greater Kruger, Nambu Camp is an intimate family camp with six suites. The accommodation overlooks a seasonal watering hole and offers sweeping views across the savanna and the Drakensberg hills, roughly fifteen kilometres from Hoedspruit.
Why choose Nambu Camp
The name "Nambu" means "river" in isiThonga, a tribute to the Olifants River that winds nearby. The camp is run by the Drinkwater family, who have nurtured and maintained this corner of the bush for nearly forty years. This family heritage is evident in the deliberately limited capacity of 12 guests, personalised service and deep knowledge of the terrain. The Balule private reserve, of which Olifants West is part, allows observation of the Big Five without the crowds of the public Kruger sectors.
Atmosphere
The camp's architecture recedes in favour of the landscape. Common areas centre around a lounge, dining room and outdoor swimming pool facing the savanna. An elevated observation deck extends the view towards the watering hole, frequented seasonally by elephants, antelopes and birds. In the evening, guests gather at the traditional boma, around the fire, to share the day's sightings. The atmosphere remains relaxed and informal.
The suites
The camp has six suites with a total capacity of twelve guests. Four chalets enjoy open views over the savanna, two overlook a shaded garden. Two connecting chalets are suitable for families. Each unit has independent access and a private terrace.
Standard amenities in each chalet:
- Air conditioning and king-size bed
- Modern bathroom opening onto the bush
- Premium toiletries
- Power sockets, USB ports and USB-C chargers on each side of the bed
Dining and services
Meals are prepared on-site by a local chef, based on a fixed menu that varies with the seasons and available produce. Dining often takes place at a large communal table, in a relaxed atmosphere. Homemade biscuits and carrot cake are among the house signatures. Game drives are punctuated by coffee breaks at sunrise and sundowners in late afternoon.
Wi-Fi is available in common areas. For activities, two game drives by vehicle are organised each day in the Balule reserve. A guided morning walk can replace a game drive, allowing guests to observe flora, animal tracks and prehistoric archaeological remains visible in the area. The camp also arranges day trips to Kruger National Park and along the Drakensberg scenic route. Keen birdwatchers will have binoculars at their disposal: over 800 bird species have been recorded in the region.
When to visit
The dry season, from May to September, is most favourable for wildlife viewing: vegetation thins out and animals concentrate around watering holes. The green season, from October to April, offers more lush landscapes, increased bird activity and the birth of young animals, though wildlife is more dispersed.
Location and access
Nambu Camp is located in Olifants West reserve, roughly fifteen kilometres from Hoedspruit, the region's gateway town. Eastgate Airport, about 45 minutes' drive away, is the most direct access option; private transfers are available on request. From Johannesburg, allow half a day for a scenic drive. A SUV or 4x4 is recommended once in the reserve, and conservation fees must be paid at the entrance. GPS coordinates and precise instructions are provided after booking. Arrival before dusk is advised.
