Historic camp in Kruger Park, riverside location on the Sabie River: chalets and tents, Mugg & Bean restaurant, vehicle, walking and boat safaris.

Lower Sabie Rest Camp is located in the south-east of Kruger National Park, on the banks of the Sabie River. This property ranks among the park's historic camps and remains a practical base for vehicle, walking and boat safaris, with direct access to one of the reserve's most wildlife-rich zones.

Why stay here

The camp combines a strategic position for wildlife viewing with complete infrastructure: on-site dining, two types of accommodation and activities led by experienced guides. The Sabie River attracts elephants, hippopotamuses, crocodiles and large predators coming to drink, turning the camp's surroundings into a permanent viewing zone. For travellers who prefer to lodge inside the park rather than in neighbouring private lodges, it's a proven and accessible option.

Atmosphere

The rhythm follows that of the bush: early morning departures for game drives, return by mid-day when heat silences wildlife, resumption in late afternoon. The camp is fenced, allowing you to move on foot between accommodation, restaurant and viewpoints over the river. The team is English-speaking and occupancy can be high during peak season, as this is one of Kruger's most popular spots.

Accommodation

Two formats are available for booking:

  • Chalets: air conditioning, television and kitchenette, for self-catering stays with modern comfort.
  • Tents: equipped with beds and fans, for a simpler experience closer to the outdoors.

Capacities vary by unit type; it's best to book well in advance, particularly for riverside chalets.

Dining and services

The Mugg & Bean restaurant serves à la carte at lunch and buffet in the evening, with a terrace overlooking the Sabie River. A café completes the offering with pastries, sandwiches and snacks, plus free wifi—useful in an area where mobile coverage remains limited. A small shop allows you to stock up for drives around the park.

For activities, the camp organises open-vehicle safaris (morning, full day, sunset and night), guided walks and boat outings on nearby water bodies, all led by park guides.

Location

Address: Skukuza – Lower Sabie Rd, Mpumalanga, 1350, South Africa. The camp is situated approximately one hour's drive from Crocodile Bridge Gate and accessible from Skukuza via the park's main road. To get there, two options: drive from Johannesburg (5 to 6 hours) or fly to Nelspruit (Mbombela) or Skukuza airport, followed by a transfer.

When to visit

The dry season, May to September, remains the most favourable period for wildlife viewing: vegetation is less dense and wildlife concentrates near water sources, including the Sabie River. June to August are the busiest months and nights can be cool. The green season (November to March) is warmer and more humid, with lush vegetation, migratory birds and many wildlife births, but sometimes reduced visibility.

Nearby

  • Sunset Dam, minutes from the camp, for viewing hippopotamuses and waterbirds.
  • Mlondozi Picnic Site, panoramic viewpoint over the plains.
  • Skukuza indigenous nursery.
  • Mac Mac Falls and the historic town of Pilgrim's Rest, as a day excursion outside the park.
  • Sabi Sands private reserve, adjoining Kruger.
  • Blyde River Canyon National Park, to extend your stay with a scenic focus.
