Ilha de Mozambique
A former Portuguese capital of East Africa and UNESCO World Heritage site, Ilha de Mozambique condenses four centuries of history on just 1.5 km² of white coral.
Discover the remarkable history of Ilha de Mozambique, inscribed on the World Heritage list, while soaking in its delightful tropical atmosphere. Located just 3 km off the coast in the Mozambique Channel in the north of the country, this destination is a pleasant escape to unwind and relax.
History
Despite its small size—just 1.5 km²—Ilha de Mozambique holds a wealth of history. Portuguese explorers arrived on the island at the end of the 15th century. Before them, Arab and Swahili communities were already established, living under the authority of a sultan named Mussa Mbiki, who gave his name to both the island and the country.
For the Portuguese, Ilha de Mozambique's position in the Mozambique Channel made it a strategic point on the route to the East Indies. Establishing a trading post here was therefore essential. By the 1500s, the island had become an indispensable stop for merchant caravans. It served as the Portuguese capital of East Africa for nearly 400 years, before Maputo assumed that role.
Numerous vestiges from the colonial era dot Ilha de Mozambique—from residential houses to forts, trading posts, and religious monuments. Beyond Portuguese influence, other cultures have also left their mark on the island. You'll find mosques, Hindu temples, chapels, and more.
Ilha de Mozambique is the birthplace of two renowned Mozambican writers: José Pedro da Silva Campos Oliveira, author of the iconic poem "O Pescador do Moçambique" (The Fisherman of Mozambique), and Orlando Mendes, winner of the Fialho de Almeida Literary Prize in 1946.
