A freshwater lagoon in southern Mozambique, Lake Nhambavale stretches alongside the Indian Ocean 13 km from Chidenguele. Kayaking, swimming, birdwatching and nearby beach.

Lake Nhambavale is a freshwater coastal lake located approximately 13 kilometres from Chidenguele, in Gaza Province, southern Mozambique. Also known as Lake Inhampavala, Inhapavala or Inhapavola, it stretches parallel to the Indian Ocean coast, separated from the sea by a sand dune ridge. Its length of around twenty kilometres and immediate proximity to beaches make it a popular stop for those combining calm water swimming with access to the ocean.

Why visit Lake Nhambavale

The lake's appeal lies in an unusual geographical configuration for Mozambique: an elongated freshwater lagoon, bordered by reed beds and palm trees, running alongside the coast without direct communication with the sea. This arrangement creates two complementary worlds just hundreds of metres apart: on one side, calm waters ideal for paddling activities and family swimming; on the other, a beach opening onto the Indian Ocean.

The site remains relatively undiscovered compared to the country's better-known beach destinations, making it an interesting choice for travellers seeking a peaceful setting near Chidenguele.

What to do here

Water activities in calm waters

The lake's sheltered waters are perfect for kayaking, canoeing and windsurfing. Several lodges on the shores offer equipment rental. Freshwater fishing is also practised, particularly from the pontoons of the accommodation facilities.

Birdwatching

The lake's riparian vegetation welcomes a varied birdlife: kingfishers, herons, jacanas and various wader species. Early morning hours offer the best viewing conditions, from the shore or by kayak.

Indian Ocean beach

The sand dune ridge separating the lake from the sea can be crossed on foot in just a few minutes from the eastern shore. The beach that stretches beyond is wide, sparsely populated, and offers both swimming in the ocean and long walks along the sand.

Swimming and relaxation

The landscaped shores of the lodges provide peaceful swimming areas, suitable for families. Supervision of children remains necessary, particularly in areas where aquatic vegetation is dense.

When to visit

The climate is subtropical, marked by a hot and humid season from November to March and a dry, cooler season from April to October. The period from April to October is generally considered the most comfortable time to visit: moderate temperatures, regular sunshine, low humidity and reduced risk of heavy rainfall. The rainy season can make some access tracks difficult and coincides with heat peaks.

Practical information

  • Accommodation: several lodges are located directly on the lake's shores, with options ranging from simple bungalows to more comfortable lodging. Advance booking is recommended during high season (July-August, South African school holidays).
  • Dining: meals are generally taken at the lodges, with few independent restaurants in the immediate vicinity of the lake.
  • Equipment rental: kayaks, canoes and windsurfing boards can be rented on-site from the accommodation facilities.
  • To bring: sunscreen, insect repellent, closed-toe shoes for the shores, and drinking water.
  • Connectivity and services: the area remains rural, so bring cash and plan purchases in Chidenguele.

How to get there

The lake is located approximately 13 km from Chidenguele, accessible by a track from the EN1 national road connecting Maputo to Xai-Xai and the north of the country. From Maputo, allow half a day's drive heading north. From Xai-Xai, access is quicker, taking around an hour. A personal vehicle or a transfer organised by the lodge is recommended, as public transport does not serve the lake shores directly. Final tracks may require a vehicle with good ground clearance, particularly after rainfall.

Further south, Inhaca Island in Maputo Bay allows you to discover another facet of the Mozambican coastline.
