Eco-responsible lodge between Lake Quissico and the Indian Ocean, in Inhambane province. Camping, dormitory and family huts in the heart of nature.

BulBul Backpackers sits on the shores of Lake Quissico, in Inhambane province, about twenty minutes' walk across the Indian Ocean dunes. An eco-conscious address designed for travelers in search of tranquility, accessible by 4x4 along a sandy track.

Why choose BulBul Backpackers

  • A rare location between lake and ocean, away from Mozambique's busy beach resorts
  • A genuine eco-responsible approach: local materials, solar energy, water sourced from dune aquifers, zero plastic bottles
  • Three accommodation options suited to different budgets, from camping to family huts
  • Cuisine that celebrates local produce and Mozambican gastronomy
  • Strong community ties, with neighboring communities involved in the lodge's daily operations

The atmosphere of the place

Built with local materials, the facilities blend seamlessly into the vegetation that borders the lake. The architectural design prioritizes integration with the natural landscape over standardized comfort. Electricity comes from solar panels, and water is drawn from aquifers beneath the surrounding dunes. This approach to energy independence goes hand-in-hand with daily environmental care, shared with travelers on-site.

The region is home to no large predators: wildlife consists mainly of the birds that populate the lake shores and monkeys moving through the vegetation. Amateur birdwatchers will find a discreet yet varied observation ground here.

Accommodation options

BulBul Backpackers offers three options to suit different traveler profiles:

  • Camping: tent pitches with access to an equipped kitchen and shared facilities
  • Dormitory: shared bunk beds, kitchen and communal facilities shared with the camping area
  • Huts: rooms with private bathroom and toilet. A family hut features an expanded living space that can accommodate up to five people

Food and activities on-site

The lodge's kitchen highlights local produce and Mozambican recipes. Several activities are accessible directly from the lodge:

  • Swimming, kitesurfing, windsurfing and canoeing on Lake Quissico
  • Fishing from the shores
  • Hikes along the dunes and trails leading to other lakes in the region (four in total to explore)
  • Walk to the Indian Ocean, about 20 minutes across the dunes, to a rarely visited beach where you'll encounter local fishermen

Location and access

The lodge is set back from Quissico, on a sandy track requiring a 4x4 vehicle. From Maputo, allow around 5.5 hours of driving (approximately 355 km) via National Route 1 to Xai Xai, then continuing toward Quissico. At the village entrance, a BulBul Backpackers sign marks the turnoff, near the hospital.

Travelers without a 4x4 or arriving by bus can arrange a shuttle from Quissico. It's best to plan arrival at the village in mid-afternoon, as reception closes early in the evening.

On the last weekend of August, Quissico hosts its annual timbila music festival, an instrument of traditional heritage inscribed on the UNESCO list. This is an ideal time to combine a nature stay with cultural immersion.
