History
The city's architecture and atmosphere tell the story of Inhambane's diverse past, stretching back to the 11th century. Inhambane was shaped by Swahili, Muslim, and Persian merchants. In 1498, the great Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama passed through Inhambane province to resupply and explore. He fell immediately under its spell and renamed it Terra de Boa Gente ("Land of Good People"). Inhambane's port subsequently became a vital stopover for Portuguese vessels trading in gold, ivory, and enslaved people from Muenemutapa.
