Activities for every taste in Bilene
In Bilene, you'll fully enjoy water-based activities. The shallow Uembje Lagoon is perfect for swimming. Craving adrenaline? Show off your surfing skills. You can also try kitesurfing, jet skiing, or parasailing. Don't miss sea excursions for fishing, exploring unique spots, or diving.
Don't forget your camera—Bilene offers exceptional natural scenes. In summer, when the climate is still dry, the shallow parts of the sea attract swarms of flamingos and other water birds in search of food. Want to see famous sea turtles, whales, or dolphins? Come between January and May during the peak migration season. For a 360° panoramic view of the ocean, head to Tortoise Cliff, approximately 1.5 km from the coast.
On the beach, there's no shortage of space to lounge, and terraces and chalets are available if you prefer more comfort. Keen to explore the region? Rent a quad and venture along the scenic road that borders the lagoon. Dirt paths lead to villages and other attractions, all the way to Xai-Xai beach if you extend your route.
Discover Coastal Flavors
Mozambique offers diverse cuisine, and Bilene has its specialties. Naturally, fresh seafood takes center stage. Fish features in many recipes, but it's shrimp, crabs, clams, and squid that deliver the most exotic flavors. Try Matapa, a dish made with crab accompanied by pounded cassava leaves, root flour, and coconut milk. It's one of Mozambique's signature dishes. Another delicious option is Paozinho, small breads enjoyed with grilled steaks or fish. For dessert, indulge in Bola Polana, a traditional cashew nut cake. After a full day at the beach, a local meal will give you energy for the evening ahead.
Bilene has about ten bars where you can relax. Some establishments feature live music to entertain vacationers, while others specialize in cocktails. A classic throughout Mozambique, Tipo Tinto rum, enjoyed neat or mixed with fruity flavors, will delight your senses.
Like most major tourist destinations in Mozambique, Bilene has its share of souvenir shops. Don't hesitate to approach local artisans to commission a necklace, ethnically patterned clothing, batik tapestry, painting, or more. The choices are plentiful!
Climate
Bilene enjoys a splendid tropical climate on the shores of the Indian Ocean. Throughout the year, the average temperature hovers around 30°C. The water is typically warm for swimming. While hats, caps, and sunglasses are essential, also pack a windproof and waterproof jacket to avoid being caught off-guard by weather changes. September, October, and May are the most popular months for visitors to Bilene.
Bilene is a three-hour drive from Maputo. From the capital, take the main highway heading north, then turn right at Macia. From Macia, it's about 30 km along a narrower but paved road to Bilene.
Bilene is a town best explored in the open air. Though buses and taxis circulate locally, walking or cycling is preferable for getting around. Alternatively, you can rent a tuk-tuk to conserve energy.
