Covane Community Lodge
Covane Community Lodge
Community lodge on the Massingir Dam: chalets, traditional huts, camping and fitted houseboat, connected to the village of Canhane.
Covane Community Lodge is a community-run accommodation situated around fifteen kilometres from Massingir village, near the dam wall. The establishment, managed in partnership with the neighbouring village of Canhane, offers chalets, traditional huts, camping and a fitted houseboat on the reservoir lake. It makes for a practical stopover between southern Mozambique and the provinces of northern South Africa.
Why stay at Covane Community Lodge
The appeal of this lodge lies as much in its location as in its management model. Positioned near Massingir Dam, in a little-frequented lacustrine zone, it offers unobstructed views over the lake and the dam wall. The lodge's revenues contribute to the development of the neighbouring village of Canhane, making Covane one of the few lodges in the region to operate on a community-based model.
The establishment suits several types of traveller: those transiting between Mozambique and the Kruger, fishing enthusiasts, or travellers seeking direct contact with Shangaan culture.
Atmosphere
The setting is rural and tranquil. The constructions use local materials — wood and thatch — and lighting comes from lamps once the generator is switched off. Evenings are rhythmed by the sounds of the lake and, depending on arrivals, by encounters with Canhane residents who help manage the site.
Accommodation: chalets, huts, camping and houseboat
Chalets and huts
The chalets offer views over the lake and dam. The huts, built from wood and thatch, feature shade-cloth windows that echo traditional architecture. Both options include full bedding, en-suite facilities with hot water, mosquito nets and provided sheets.
Camping
The camping area provides access to an outdoor kitchen and shared facilities. Note: electricity is generated by a diesel generator, running in principle from 6pm to 10pm (times to be confirmed on site).
The houseboat "The Elefante"
Designed by South African builder Lightleys Holiday Houseboats, the houseboat sleeps four and offers an uncommon accommodation format in the region. It is equipped with:
- Gas cooker with oven
- Refrigerator
- Hot shower
- Charcoal braai
- Full crockery
- CD player
A lake excursion can be arranged with a skipper.
Dining and services
The lodge restaurant offers a set menu as well as à la carte dishes, in a straightforward style: chicken salad, quiche and light preparations. The bar serves water, soft drinks, beers, wines and spirits.
Fishing is possible on the lake (tilapias, catfish, silvery carp, and tiger fish for catch-and-release). Equipment is not provided: bring your own gear.
Location and access
The lodge is situated around 15 kilometres from Massingir village, close to the dam wall. Its position makes it a logical stopover for travellers linking southern Mozambique to parks in the northeast of South Africa, notably via the Limpopo border.
Things to do nearby
The village of Canhane can be visited with a local guide: an opportunity to explore Shangaan culture and meet a traditional healer. The town of Massingir, marked by Portuguese influences, is worth a detour for its market, pubs and, by reservation, traditional dance performances. Bird watching and sunsets over the dam round out the activities on offer.
To extend your stay, other accommodations can complement your itinerary: Hlane Royal National Park Ndlovu Camp for safari, or beach options such as Casa Na Praia and Baobab Beach Backpackers.
