Chitengo Safari Camp
Chitengo Safari Camp
Historic camp nestled within Gorongosa National Park, an ideal base for safaris in the heart of Mozambique's Great Rift Valley.
Chitengo Safari Camp is one of the few accommodations located inside Gorongosa National Park, in central Mozambique. Managed by the Gorongosa National Parks Authority, it serves as a base for travellers exploring this emblematic reserve in the Great Rift Valley.
Why stay at Chitengo
Built in 1941, Chitengo was long the reference camp for visiting Gorongosa. Its operations were suspended in 1977 during the civil war, leaving the site abandoned for nearly two decades. A restoration project enabled its reopening in 1995, and the camp is now part of the park's ecological rehabilitation programme—one of the most ambitious in Southern Africa.
Staying on-site allows you to set out on safari early without travelling from outside the park, and to extend outings until dusk. It's also a way to directly support the park's management, as the camp partly funds conservation operations.
Atmosphere: colonial heritage meets the bush
The original buildings, restored with care, retain a subtle colonial character—whitewashed walls, thatched roofs, terraces overlooking the vegetation. The atmosphere remains that of a bush camp rather than a formal lodge: you'll hear birdsong at dawn, sometimes baboons at the forest edge, and evenings stretch out around the firepit or at the bar. Connectivity is limited, which is very much part of the experience.
Accommodation
- 18 traditional thatched cabanas, equipped with twin or king-size beds, air-conditioning, mosquito nets and ensuite bathrooms with hot water showers.
- Equipped camping area with covered gazebos, firepits, barbecue space, hot showers and laundry facilities for independent travellers.
- A swimming pool is available to residents for refreshing breaks between excursions.
Dining and services
The restaurant offers both buffet and à la carte dishes focused on Mozambican cuisine, complemented by a casual bar. A Mozambican breakfast is included for cabana guests. Campers can dine at the restaurant or cook on-site.
Activities from the camp
- Guided safaris in raised Land Cruisers, at dawn and dusk, through miombo forest, grasslands and wetlands across the park.
- Self-drive safaris possible in designated zones with your own 4x4, in accordance with ranger guidelines.
- Hikes on Mount Gorongosa (rainforest, waterfalls), birdwatching walks.
- Community visits and participation in the park's tree-planting initiatives.
Location and access
The camp is located within Gorongosa National Park. Distances and times are approximate, as track conditions may vary.
By road:
- From Beira: approximately 200 km / 4 hours via EN1 highway.
- From Chimoio: approximately 135 km / 3 hours.
- Private transfers or shuttle services can be arranged from both cities, often routed through the park.
By air: charter flights or shared shuttles Beira–Chitengo (35 to 40 minutes), operating Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, other days by reservation.
Best time to visit
The dry season, from April/May through November, is most favourable: tracks are passable, wildlife congregates around water sources, and temperatures are pleasant. Park tracks close during the rainy season, December to March, due to flooding. Transition months (April, November) offer greener landscapes and lighter crowds.
