A brief history of Zavora
Part of Inhambane Province, Zavora Bay is located in Inharrime District, approximately 420 kilometers northeast of Maputo, Mozambique's capital. It sits 96 kilometers from Inhambane and 29 kilometers from the town of Inharrime.
Also known as "Praia de Zavora" (Zavora Beach) or "Ponta de Zavora" (Zavora Point), the origin of the name "Zavora" remains unknown for now. This small seaside resort is renowned for its vast natural coral reefs and the richness of its marine floor.

Exploring the ruins of the famous MV Klipfontein
When exploring Zavora's seafloor, you cannot miss the enormous wreck of the famous MV Klipfontein, measuring 160 meters long. According to accounts, this great vessel shipwrecked off the Mozambique coast in 1953 after striking a Zavora reef. Over the years, the ship's ruins have become a refuge for thousands of fish. Adorned with magnificent corals, the vessel resembles a beautiful sculpture. It is a highly renowned diving site in this part of Mozambique.
An extraordinary underwater experience in Zavora
Zavora is a premier destination especially for experienced scuba divers. It's hardly surprising—you'll find incredible diving spots here. The sensation becomes even more intense once underwater, in the company of sharks (tiger sharks, bull sharks, dusky sharks, blacktip sharks…), schools of fish and turtle varieties (hawksbill turtles, loggerhead turtles, leatherback turtles…). The luckiest may encounter Birostris and Aldredi, two Manta ray species becoming increasingly rare.
Admiring Zavora's iconic lighthouse
Another attraction that draws many tourists: the Zavora lighthouse. Built in 1910, it is one of the last lighthouses you'll find in Mozambique. Standing at a height of 53 feet (16 meters), this historic lighthouse offers unobstructed views of the sea. To this day, the lighthouse remains operational. Snorkeling: a fun pastime
Spanning 2 kilometers, the immense Zavora reef is perfect for snorkeling, swimming and fishing. Indeed, tidal pools and shallow waters are abundant in this area. A few practical details
From Maputo, you need to cover approximately 420 kilometers before reaching Zavora. Take the EN1 road toward Inharrime. About 10 kilometers from Inharrime, you'll see a small turn-off leading to Zavora. From this junction, you have only 17 kilometers left to reach Zavora's dream beaches.
When to visit?
Zavora enjoys a tropical climate. Between January and December, temperatures are pleasant and rainfall is limited. This is the best time to visit Zavora beach and go scuba diving. To witness humpback whale migration, plan your trip between June and October.
