Tofo is a small fishing town located in the southeast of Mozambique, on the Ponto do Barra peninsula, in Inhambane Province. It's a sought-after destination for its long white-sand beach, vibrant nightlife and exceptional marine richness. Echoes of the Past

Portuguese colonists established their presence in the region during the 16th century and used the ports of Inhambane for the slave and gold trade.

By the 19th century, the town had become an important commercial hub for the Portuguese.

Following Mozambique's independence in 1975, the settlement came under the control of the local government.

The Town Today

Tofo was originally a fishing village considered inaccessible to travellers. From the 1970s onwards, it evolved into one of the region's most popular destinations, attracting thousands of visitors annually. This dynamic, cosmopolitan town has managed to preserve its authentic charm and laid-back atmosphere, despite the development of numerous hotels, restaurants and bars.

Must-See Destinations

Tofo Beach is a long stretch of fine sand extending for several kilometres. It's the perfect spot for swimming, surfing or leisurely walks. The beach is lined with palm and coconut trees providing shade and respite. It's also where night owls converge, with bars and nightclubs offering music and cocktails into the early hours.

Tofinho is a village neighbouring Tofo, just 10 minutes' drive away. It's a quieter, more picturesque setting than Tofo, with sweeping ocean vistas. Tofinho is famous for its wave known as "The Fingers," attracting experienced surfers. This hamlet also serves as the departure point for spotting humpback whales that migrate along the coast between June and October.

Tofo is renowned for its white-sand beaches and turquoise waters, perfect for surfing, kitesurfing, kayaking and scuba diving.

The Town's Climate

Tofo enjoys a tropical climate, with average temperatures ranging between 20°C and 30°C year-round.

The dry season runs from May to October, characterised by sunny weather and minimal rainfall.

During the humid season from November to April, the town experiences intense but brief showers.

The best time to visit Tofo is May to October, when weather is pleasant and marine life is most visible.

Tofo sits on the Indian Ocean coast, approximately 500 km north of Maputo, Mozambique's capital. The town is accessible by air from Johannesburg or overland from Maputo or Vilankulo.

To reach Tofo from France, fly to Johannesburg, South Africa, then onward to Inhambane, Mozambique. Direct flights connect Johannesburg and Inhambane several times weekly. Total travel time is around 15 hours. Once in Inhambane, take a taxi or bus to reach Tofo, roughly 30 minutes' drive away.

Getting Around Tofo

Tofo is a fairly small town that's easily explored on foot or by bicycle. Local taxis called "chapas"—minibuses or pick-ups—circulate between various points of interest. Fares are typically negotiable with the driver.
