Nature & Escape

A signature camp in Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary 1.6 km from Lobamba: traditional huts, wildlife in open circulation and nature activities.

Set within the southern section of the Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary, Mlilwane Rest Camp lies 1.6 km from Lobamba, the royal and legislative capital of the Kingdom of Eswatini. The camp is unfenced: impalas, warthogs, nyalas and ostriches roam freely between the lodges, defining the experience offered here.

Why stay at Mlilwane Rest Camp

The camp serves as a benchmark base for exploring Eswatini's oldest animal sanctuary. Its appeal rests on three concrete elements: free-roaming wildlife throughout the camp itself, traditional lodges (beehive huts, rondavels, log cabins) that go beyond a simple night's rest, and a range of outdoor activities directly accessible from reception. Staff speak English and Zulu, reception operates 24/7 and mobile security patrols continuously.

Atmosphere

The camp's atmosphere is rural and unfenced. Travelers hear hippos from their veranda, encounter nyalas on the way to the restaurant and observe birds frequenting the nearby wetland. The camp welcomes families, hikers and wildlife watchers in a straightforward setting with no pursuit of luxury. It remains open year-round, with wildlife visible in every season; the drier months do, however, facilitate observation around water points.

Accommodation

The site offers some fifty lodges and twenty camping pitches. The available booking options reflect the region's vernacular architecture:

  • Beehive Huts: traditional Swazi huts with woven thatch, in simple or twin configurations.
  • Rondavels: circular huts, available as twin or family units with kitchenette for those wishing to cook.
  • Log Cabins: wooden cabins in single, double or family configurations.
  • Six Bed Unit: six-bed unit with two bedrooms, lounge, private veranda and barbecue area, suited to groups.
  • Camping: some twenty pitches for independent travelers.

Daily housekeeping is provided.

Dining and services

The Hippo Haunt restaurant overlooks a basin frequented by hippos, crocodiles and water birds. The menu blends African, European and South African cuisines, with buffets at breakfast and dinner, and à la carte service at lunch. A children's menu is available.

On the services side, the camp features a swimming pool with terrace and bar, barbecue areas, equipped picnic spaces and a children's play area. Meeting and banquet rooms are available for an additional fee. Most spaces are partially accessible to people with reduced mobility. Payment is accepted in cash, Visa or Mastercard.
