Letaba Rest Camp
Letaba Rest Camp
SANParks rest camp in the heart of Kruger National Park, on a bend of the Letaba River renowned for its elephants. Varied accommodation and unique soundscape.
Letaba Rest Camp is located in the centre of Kruger National Park, on a bend of the Letaba River in South Africa. Managed by SANParks, the camp serves as a base for travellers wishing to explore the northern half of the reserve, wilder and less crowded than the south.
Why stay at Letaba
The name "Letaba" means "sandy river" in the Tsonga language, referring to the wide, clear riverbed where elephants regularly pass through. The camp is indeed renowned for the concentration of pachyderms that descend to drink below, observable from terraces overlooking the river.
Unlike a private lodge, this is a public rest camp: the atmosphere is family-oriented, with far more campsites than rooms, and guests share common areas. It's the option for those wanting to sleep inside the park without the premium rates of private concessions.
A unique soundscape
At night, Letaba transforms into an acoustic stage. Owls, nightjars, frogs, fruit bats, crickets and cicadas take turns in a continuous concert. Then, without warning, a lion's roar carries for several kilometres and everything falls silent. Minutes later, the soundscape resumes, as if nothing happened. This is one of the most striking memories retained by travellers who have stayed here.
Accommodation
The camp offers several types, from the simplest to the most equipped:
- 60 electrified camping pitches for tents and motorhomes
- Safari tents ventilated with veranda
- Air-conditioned huts with river views
- Bungalows with traditional architecture, equipped with a kitchenette
- Guest houses comprising lounge, dining room, open kitchen and outdoor barbecue
- Guest cottages for larger groups or extended families
The most sought-after units are those overlooking the river bend directly, where you can observe elephants from your veranda early in the morning.
On-site facilities
Letaba is one of the best-equipped camps in the Kruger:
- Buffet restaurant and bar
- Private gardens equipped for barbecuing (braai), an essential South African tradition
- Supply shop and fuel station dedicated to the camp, useful for long journeys through the park
- AM Spa Kruger, located on site
- Outdoor swimming pool
- Small elephant museum (Elephant Hall) dedicated to Kruger's great tuskers
Location and access
Letaba is located in the central-northern part of the park, immediately adjacent to the river of the same name. The camp is accessible via the Phalaborwa (to the west) and Olifants (to the south) gates, via a network of well-maintained tarred roads. Allow a full day's drive from Johannesburg by car, with an overnight stop recommended to avoid arriving after the gates close.
When to visit
The dry season, from May to September, remains the best time for safaris: vegetation clears, animals converge at watering holes and daytime temperatures are bearable. The green season (November-March) offers lush vegetation, migratory birds and young animals being born, but dense vegetation complicates wildlife watching and heat can be oppressive.
Nearby attractions
Several sites are worth a detour from Letaba:
- Skukuza indigenous plant nursery
- Masorini ruins, remnants of a blacksmith village
- Matambeni Bird Hide, ornithological observatory
- Balule private reserve
- Magoebaskloof forest park
- Sabie Falls
Wildlife-wise, you commonly observe from the camp or its surroundings: elephants, lala palms, red-headed weavers, fish eagles and all the classic megafauna of Kruger.
