Dusk bathes the African savanna in golden light, illuminating the surrounding trees and bushes. Guests' whispered conversations mingle with nature's sounds as they make their way to the Boma, a traditional communal space where food and celebration await. Enticing aromas of African cuisine fill the air as visitors take their seats around the fire. Welcome to Boma Dinner, a unique culinary and cultural experience that takes you through the flavors, sounds, and customs of Africa.

An unforgettable African evening

Dinner typically takes place beneath a large thatched roof, traditionally constructed with natural materials such as branches and leaves. Visitors enjoy stews, grilled meats, local vegetables, and more exotic fare such as crocodile meat or edible insects. The flavors are simply indescribable. Many guests leave with a newfound culinary passion.

The décor is distinctly African, and the evening is enhanced by tribal dances, African storytelling, interactive drums, and fire performances. Local communities share their history, culture, and way of life through various performances.

The origins of Boma Dinner

Boma Dinner draws inspiration from the centuries-old traditions of the San people. In Swahili, Boma means enclosure. It was originally a family gathering space set outdoors, protected from wild animals. The concept has since been reimagined to introduce visitors to Africa's culinary flavors and dining rituals.

In its early days in Zimbabwe, the concept sparked enthusiasm among travelers and quickly became a tremendous success. Boma Dinner has since been adopted at other African tourist destinations, notably in Mozambique. Here is a non-exhaustive list of establishments that have embraced this celebrated dinner in the country: Leopard Hills Safari Lodge, Lion Sands River Lodge, Royal Kruger Lodge, Lugenda Wilderness Camp, Royal Malewane Lodge…

The continent's flagship: The Boma Dinner & Drum Show at Victoria Falls Safari Lodge

Upon arrival, you'll be presented with a Chitenge cloth to wear. Women can have their faces painted with decorative designs, while men sport warrior patterns. Women also have the option of having their hair braided.

During the day, the venue is relaxed, offering sandwiches, fish and chips, and a pool for guests.

In the evening, comfortably seated beneath the grand thatched roof, you can savor smoked crocodile tails, grilled warthog, wood-fired spit-roasted meats, or even mopane worms. Vegetarian, dietary, and vegan options are also available.

Traditional entertainment such as dances and interactive drums (where each guest is given an instrument) take place from 7 p.m. onwards, along with a divination experience.
