Reilly's Rock Hilltop Lodge
Reilly's Rock Hilltop Lodge
Colonial lodge of the Reilly family at the heart of Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary, a peaceful stopover between Eswatini and Mozambique with safaris, horseback riding and mountain biking.
Located within Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary in Eswatini, Reilly's Rock Hilltop Lodge occupies the former residence of Mickey Reilly, a member of a pioneering family in nature conservation within the kingdom. The colonial building, perched on a wooded hillside, now serves as a stopover for travelers heading on to Mozambique via the nearby border.
Why stay here
The lodge brings together three complementary assets: a heritage building steeped in history, a location within an active wildlife reserve, and immediate proximity to Eswatini's royal botanical gardens. It is a worthwhile stop for those wishing to combine wildlife observation (antelopes, endemic birds), immersion in Swazi culture and refined comfort, before continuing to the Mozambican coast.
- Accommodation in a restored colonial building with indigenous wood finishes
- Direct access to trails in Mlilwane reserve
- Varied activities: mountain biking, horseback riding, Land Rover safaris, hiking
- Useful stopover on an Eswatini–Mozambique itinerary
Atmosphere
The lodge cultivates a family home atmosphere inherited from the colonial era, with its original verandas, local wood paneling and botanical gardens populated by aloe and cycads. Evenings gather around the campfire, where three-course dinners are served as antelopes graze nearby and the song of nocturnal birds takes over. The spirit remains one of a quiet stay, where the pace aligns with that of the surrounding wildlife.
Accommodations
Four options coexist, spread between the main house and outbuildings:
- Luxury Rooms (main house): double bed, private bathroom with shower, panoramic veranda, air conditioning or fan, colonial décor.
- Standard Rooms (main house): double or twin bed, bathroom with bathtub or shower, original veranda, natural ventilation.
- Garden Cottage (DBB formula): two rooms with double beds, adjoining bathroom, shared lounge, private outdoor space, simple kitchen.
- Down Gran's Guesthouse: three rooms with en-suite bathrooms, lounge with garden access, kitchen equipped for self-catering. Located 200 m from the lodge, it suits families, hiking groups or riders seeking greater independence.
Wi-Fi is generally available in common areas; it is advisable to confirm this at booking.
Dining and services
The cuisine favors local produce and adapts to special diets upon request.

- Indoor dining room with indigenous wood finishes, used in bad weather
- Bar with a selection of wines and spirits

Activities
- Self-guided hiking on hillside trails, with valley viewpoints and wildlife observation
- Mountain biking on reserve tracks (antelope breeding areas to avoid)

Location and access
The lodge is located in the center of Mlilwane wildlife reserve, approximately 3 km from the sanctuary's main rest camp. From Lobamba, access is via the M204 road heading east, following signs to Reilly's Rock. Allow just under half an hour's drive from Mbabane. For travelers without a vehicle, taxis and minibuses connect Mbabane to Lobamba; it is then advisable to arrange a transfer directly with the lodge.
