Olifants Rest Camp
Olifants Rest Camp
Camp overlooking the Olifants River in central-north Kruger Park: bungalows, guest houses, observation platform and guided safaris.
Olifants Rest Camp sits on a cliff overlooking the Olifants River in central-north Kruger National Park. The site combines a rare vantage point across the valley, solid accommodations suited to families and groups, and direct access to the park's most game-rich bush sectors.
Why stay at Olifants
The camp takes its name from the river bordering its cliff: "Olifants" means "elephants" in Afrikaans, referring to the herds that frequent the banks. Just steps from the bungalows stands a remarkable baobab tree bearing the engraved signature of GR von Weilligh from 1891, one of the first surveyors to map the region. The camp is also linked to the history of the "Magnificent Seven," the seven largest tusked elephants in Kruger: six of them had their tusks displayed here before they were transferred to the Letaba interpretation centre.
Atmosphere and observation platform
Olifants' character stems from its elevated position. An observation platform within the camp grounds allows you to track hippopotamuses and crocodiles in the river below, as well as elephants, lions, and buffalo coming down to drink, binoculars in hand. Birdwatchers spot eagles, storks, and owls. The Tindlovu restaurant, perched above the river, extends this panoramic logic for breakfast or dinner; a takeaway kiosk rounds out the offering for bush outings.
Accommodations
Olifants has no tent or caravan sites, but offers several categories of solid lodging:
- Bungalows sleeping 2 to 4, with private bathroom, air conditioning, and kitchenette or shared kitchen depending on the unit. Family versions add a large patio, barbecue, and two bathrooms.
- Cottage for 4 people: two bedrooms with bathroom, lounge area, small kitchen, and outdoor space equipped with a braai.
- Guest houses for 8 people, with several bedrooms, equipped kitchen, lounge, private terraces, and DSTV channels. The Nshawu house features a deep plunge pool and river views; the Lebombo house is configured with four bedrooms.

Activities from camp
The programme follows the rhythm of the bush:

- Ranger-led bush walks
- Night safaris

- Bush braais and breakfasts in the field, transfer included
On your own, the S90, S44 routes and the Balule loop offer itineraries conducive to wildlife viewing. Ngotso Pan and the N'wamanzi viewpoint are among the most popular stops.
Location and access
Olifants Rest Camp is located in the central-north section of Kruger National Park, accessible via the Phalaborwa gate approximately 83 km from camp. Once through the gate, allow 2.5 to 3 hours of driving, punctuated by wildlife sightings from the first kilometres.
- By air: Kruger Park Gateway airport (PHW) is 3 km from the Phalaborwa gate and receives direct flights from Johannesburg. Rental car recommended.
- By car from Johannesburg: expect a full day's drive via the N1 to Polokwane, then the R71 through Tzaneen to Phalaborwa.
When to visit
The dry season, May to September, offers the best viewing conditions: vegetation is low and wildlife congregates around permanent water sources, notably the Olifants River. Transition months (April, October) strike a balance between visible fauna and milder temperatures. The green season (November to March) is warmer and more humid, but favours birdwatching and antelope births.
Combine with nearby experiences
To extend a circuit around Kruger and beyond, several properties of similar character merit a detour:
- Pezulu Tree House Lodge — treehouses nestled in the canopy.
- Phophonyane Falls Ecolodge — ecolodge at the edge of a forest reserve.
- Naara Eco Lodge & Spa — nature lodge with wellness focus.
